the beauty of the soul

Saint Augustine said that love is the beauty of the soul. As I continue to go from one season to the next in my life I am time and again struck by the fact that my understanding and experience of love is something that can only ever expand, deepen and be enriched as I love and am loved:

And high up above or down below
When you’re too in love to let it go
But if you never try you’ll never know
Just what you’re worth

Coldplay, Fix you

The greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved; loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves. –ย Victor Hugo

I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love. –ย Mother Teresa

One parting note: When I was younger I always thought that you knew that someone loved you when they didn’t break your heart. My thoughts on the matter have, however, changed. Now I hope and trust only that as I open my heart to someone, in the knowledge that whether they want to or not they will break it, this gesture of trust would be reciprocated.
