Saint Augustine said that love is the beauty of the soul. As I continue to go from one season to the next in my life I am time and again struck by the fact that my understanding and experience of love is something that can only ever expand, deepen and be enriched as I love and am loved:
And high up above or down below
When you’re too in love to let it go
But if you never try you’ll never know
Just what you’re worth
– Coldplay, Fix you
The greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved; loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves. – Victor Hugo
I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love. – Mother Teresa
One parting note: When I was younger I always thought that you knew that someone loved you when they didn’t break your heart. My thoughts on the matter have, however, changed. Now I hope and trust only that as I open my heart to someone, in the knowledge that whether they want to or not they will break it, this gesture of trust would be reciprocated.
