Gustave Flaubert said that the art of writing is the art of discovering what you believe. In writing I hope to draw from deep wells of identity and faith dug through a life fully-lived. As Anais Nin said, “My ideas usually come not at my desk writing but in the midst of living.” This evening I had the privilege of discussing literature, writing and storytelling with one of my dearest friends. It was one of those conversations that left my heart and my mind brimming with life and the incomparable richness of not only ideas, but heartbeats, shared. Maya Angelou said, “The idea is to write it so that people hear it and it slides through the brain and goes straight to the heart.” In order to make this happen the words I put on paper need to exit me along a similar route and find substance to fill them with life along the way.
