Viktor E. Frankl said: “What is to give light must endure burning.” I have always hoped to be someone who gives light and lets myself be used up for something that is greater than the sum of my parts.
I will be traveling to South Africa in the coming days to soak up some sunshine and hopefully get some perspective on 2011 but also my (almost) first three years living in Berlin. As what has been a whirlwind year draws to a close I am grateful to have a breather and reconnect with some people who have known me, well, forever. I have shared this quote before but I thought I would share it again as it captures one of the key experiences that I had this year: “Sometimes our light goes out but is blown into flame by another human being. Each of us owes deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this light” (Albert Schweitzer). I am immensely grateful to my friends, old and new, who have time and again rekindled the flame in me with the love, grace and truth that they have shown me.
I will be away until the end of December but will be sure to return with a refreshed mind, some more reflections on 2011 and a couple of lovely pics of the south to share.
Wishing you a blessed Christmas time and a good transition into the new year.
