I am beginning to understand what Henry van Dyke meant when he said, “Time is too slow for those who wait, too swift for those who fear, too long for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice, but for those who love, time is eternity.” Eternity has been placed in the hearts of men and although I generally find a polarisation of the heart and the head problematic I have to agree that time – in all of its relational, non-linear glory – can, as Seneca said, heal what reason cannot.
On Sunday I spent the evening catching up with a friend whom I sadly do not get to see that often. The hours were wrapped in music, laughter, golden silences and the sense that time was at our mercy. In between everything that was said and unsaid I was struck by the realisation that moments simply spent with friends unlock the eternity in our hearts.
