Whirlwind days, weeks, months and years are etched with highs and lows into that landscape only you can see. New adventures, false starts and failures traced where previously had been only the unbeaten track. Pressures you thought would certainly break anything or -one foolish enough to shoulder them, somehow shaped the hills and valleys we now recognize as beautiful. The rivers of tears that seemed endless watered both the depths and the high places beckoning the new to spring forth. At times roars of frustration and grief echo, but just as often it is the sound of laughter, singing and the glorious hum of conversation. Frank Auerbach’s portrait of Estella Olive West, drawn entirely from life, took almost seventy sittings to complete. Auerbach drew, erased and reworked the image constantly so that what we see as the final artwork is built on several previous attempts and saturated with a plethora of the artist’s experiences of the model. Tears, patches and all. Auerbach supposedly said, “It seems to me madness to wake up in the morning and do something other than paint, considering that one may not wake up the following morning.” What is the thing I would consider it madness not to do, if today was the last one I had on this planet? Ps.
